Almost all my holidays start from York Rail Station, in the centre of my home city York in
North Yorkshire, England.--- York station is on the East Coast Main Line. Halfway
between London Kings Cross and Edinburgh Waverley. -Today the Train Companies that use the station are LNER, Cross Country. East Midlands, Grand Central, Trans Pennine and North Trains. There used to 15 platforms , now
11.--- The first ever train station in York was a wooden platform in Queens Street in 1839.. In 1841 a
station with two platforms opened to replace it, inside the city wall. Trains had to reverse in and out of the station to reach the main line, causing a bottle neck. So in 1877 the present station opened, having taken 3 years to build. It was designed by N.E.R. architect Thomas Prosser.. The train shed is 800 ft long, with magnificent arched glass roof, held 42ft
above the platforms by iron columns The platforms extend out of the train shed.
The whole station is built with a lovely curve. In 1877 it was the largest station in the world. The first ever train to leave York Station in 1877 was the 05-30 to Scarborough over Scarborough railway bridge over the river Ouse. Recently improvements have been made to make a pedestrian entrance from Scarborough Bridge. ----By 1910 more than 350 trains a day were
running.-- The station was bombed during the Second World War , killing two railway
workers. --- The front Exit from the station must be the best view on leaving a station. Straight
in front the city wall with the yellow of the daffodils in Spring. and to the left the
walk to York Minster. The rear exit is to the National Railway Museum in Leeman
Road., using stairs.ARRIVING OR RETURNING, WALK FROM YORK STATION. Minster in view.
